The English along with Wales Placed Together for the 2027 World Cup in Australia

Draw event for the 2027 tournament
The group draw was overseen by sporting icons including two-time World Cup winner Dan Carter.

England and their Welsh counterparts find themselves placed in an identical pool for the 2027 Rugby World Cup, promising a major pool stage clash in Australia. Completing the group in Pool F by Tonga and the Zimbabwean Sables.

This draw recalls their memorable clash in the pool stages of the 2015 World Cup, where a Welsh win at England's home ground contributed to the English team's shock group stage elimination.

Other Notable Group Draws

Ireland alongside Scotland also share a group once again, just as the situation from the France 2023 tournament. In that tournament, Ireland secured a 36-14 victory, with their opponents failing to advance to the quarter-finals.

Los Teros and Portugal, who each impressed as surprise packages in the last World Cup, complete that Pool D.

Significantly, the victors of these two groups are kept apart from holders and top-ranked South Africa until the final, presuming the South Africans top their assigned pool.

Knockout Ramifications

Should the pools conclude in line with the current global standings, other top favourites like New Zealand and France would also be kept apart from the likes of England and Ireland until the final.

In that scenario, Argentina would be the remaining highly-seeded nation on that half of the knockout draw as those northern hemisphere teams.

Hosts Face Blockbuster Fixture

Tournament hosts Australia find themselves together with their great rivals and triple champions New Zealand in Pool A.

Australia will open the tournament in Perth on 1 October 2027 in a blockbuster match designed to launch the event.

In other groups, reigning champions the Springboks have drawn the Azzurri, Georgia and Romania. France are grouped with Japan, future hosts the USA and Samoa.

Expanded Format for 2027

Los Pumas will face the Flying Fijians, Spain and Canada as the World Cup expands to twenty-four nations from the 20 who took part in France.

This edition will feature a last-16 round for the very first time in the competition's existence.

Although the winner of England and Wales's group may be kept apart from some of the game's heavyweights early on, they will meet the runner-up from Pool B – probably the Italians – in the first knockout round.

A total of four of the other six pool winners will face a team that finished third from the pool stages.
