The Baldur's Gate 3 Creators Reveal a New Divinity, Labeling it Their Largest RPG Ever

The buzz around the recent awards show was significant, particularly after presenter Geoff Keighley shared a puzzling image of a desert monolith. The mystery is finally answered. Larian Studios is working on a fresh Divinity game.

Titled simply Divinity, the game was showcased with a daring trailer that included intense imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to scenes of revelry and the literal descent into chaos.

A Different Direction

Anyone hoping for Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. The studio stated ahead of time that a follow-up to its beloved RPGs is not currently in development.

That said, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a evolution of the main series. This distinction implies that the team is likely crafting a real-time experience rather than another turn-based title. For now, it remains theory, as only a teaser video is available.

A Pillar of Modern RPGs

The Divinity series is widely praised and arguably it sparked the recent resurgence of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are defined by detailed worlds, player agency, and flexible progression—elements that later found massive success in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its world is classic fantasy, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the remarkable agency bestowed upon the player.

While numerous modern RPGs have simplified options, Divinity is full of specialized paths that are viable with a specific type of character with a personal story.

The series is also famously open-ended, enabling players to experiment throughout the entire experience. Most missions can be approached in diverse methods, often in lateral fashion.

  • You might progress the story because you remembered something a dog told you.
  • Or, you could bypass a challenge by using the world itself in a unorthodox way.

A New Chapter Begins

It is these creative systems that allow people to hail games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games of all time. Now, the RPG community can get ready for another adventure in this groundbreaking franchise.
