European Union Might Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson States

The EU could “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the United States against five Europeans involved in combating online hate and disinformation, an EU official stated.

European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’

European leaders such as the French president charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions were placed on figures that were central to campaigns to enact laws regulating US-based technology firms.

“For too long, European activists have led organised efforts to pressure American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in criticizing the decision.

The restrictions were imposed this week against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

This European legislation is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders argue the regulations are necessary to combat hate speech and falsehoods.

This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and European institutions.

Other Developments Reported Today

In other legal news:

  • A federal judge has halted attempts to reduce security grants to local governments which resist certain immigration enforcement policies. The judge ruled the case was “a further instance” of tying government assistance to policy compliance.
  • Approval was given for the deployment of hundreds of national guard troops to New Orleans ahead of the new year, alongside an active border security initiative.
  • A Pacific Island nation has agreed to take in a limited number of migrants from the US in return for additional aid, after signing a formal agreement with US authorities.

Furthermore, a congressional representative has filed a lawsuit to demand the stripping of the current president’s name from a well-known cultural institution in Washington DC.

Analysts have also noted that comments regarding foreign petroleum resources reflect a wider ideology in some quarters of “economic expansionism”, leading to parallels with past foreign policy strategies.
